Food photographer, Karen Wise, has been photographing cookbooks, editorials, and destination weddings for over 10 years. Shortly after graduating from RISD, Karen moved to New York City to assist several renowned food and still life photographers while continuing her own fine art work.
It didn’t take long before Karen was shooting food assignments of her own for publications such as Food Arts, Gourmet, The Boston Globe, Business Insider, and Time Out New York. Meeting chefs and food writers she admires has always been a dream of hers. Some of the talent Karen has worked with include Ruth Reichl, Ming Tsai and Marcus Samuelsson, Michael Psilakis, and Gabrielle Hamilton. At the same time, Karen’s wedding business took off. In spring 2008 Karen was named one of the Top Wedding Photographers in the World by American PHOTO magazine, and has recently been published in Vogue India, New York Magazine, and Photo District News (PDN).
Karen’s cookbook photography credits include “The Way We Cook”, by Julie Riven and Sheryl Julian (Houghton Mifflin), “Savoring the Hamptons”, by Silvia Lehrer (Running Press), and “Ultimate Nachos”, by Lee Frank and Rachel Anderson (St. Martin’s Press). She recently completed a cocktails cookbook shot on location in Montauk, NY titled “Tiki with a Twist”, written by hula bar owner Lynn Calvo and James Beard award winner James Fraioli (Sterling Publications).
In addition to photographing food, Karen also teaches food photography & styling workshops collaborating with chefs and food stylists in the New York area. She loves organic, locally grown food, weekly yoga classes, and traveling (she’s originally from Montreal and speaks French too). Karen lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn with her husband and two cats.
